Tenerife Rallies Behind the Civil Guard’s GRS8 Team

The Cabildo de Tenerife has unanimously urged the State to ensure the permanence, functionality, and deployment of the Reserve and Security Group No. 8 of the Civil Guard (GRS 8) across the islands. This was the sole motion with institutional backing yesterday, alongside enhancements to the University Hospital of Canary Islands. The Insular Corporation has approved a proposal to request the Home Office to expedite the increase and reinforcement of personnel within the State Security Forces in the Canary Islands. Furthermore, it calls upon the Government of Spain to continue the renewal of the vehicle fleet and to bolster the material resources available.

Commitment

In line with this aim, the Cabildo de Tenerife has stated its intention to “maintain its commitment to relocate its base,” as referenced in the agreement regarding assistance of 20,000 euros to the municipality of Arafo for amending its planning to allocate land for the unit’s headquarters.

Catalog

The Insular Plenary additionally urged the Ministry of the Interior to comply with the Civil Guard Catalog established for the Canary Islands, which specifies the number of agents required. The joint text also calls upon the Government of the Canary Islands, along with island and municipal administrations, to support this motion and make appropriate efforts to strengthen the call for GRS No. 8’s continued presence in the archipelago.

Booster

The Plenary further urges the Government of Spain and the Ministry of the Interior to take steps towards the increase and reinforcement of the personnel in the State Security organisations in the Canary Islands. It also requests the ongoing renewal of the vehicle fleet and the enhancement of resources across all State Security Forces and Bodies operating in the Canary Islands.

Base

Currently, the HUNDRED GRS agents based in the Canary Islands operate from Los Rodeos-Tenos Norte airport. This specialised unit is tasked with responding to and providing services throughout the islands during large events, demonstrations, maintenance and restoration of public order, as well as dealing with incidents, accidents, and criminal acts posing radiological, bacteriological, and chemical hazards for individuals and property. They also provide civil protection services in scenarios of serious risk, disasters, significant forest fires, volcanic crises, search and rescue operations, and combat against criminal organizations.
