Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 28 Feb. (Europa Press) –

The Minister for the Natural Environment of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Blanca Pérez, has refuted on Friday during the Plenary session of the Insular Corporation that the Government Group has made any statements regarding a potential reopening of Playa Garden, located in the port of Puerto de la Cruz, in the summer of 2025. This section of the Tenerife coastline has been closed for eight months due to a malfunction in the pipeline that discharges wastewater.

“From this council’s perspective, there are no plans to reopen the beach this summer. Efforts are underway, but it has not been stated that the beach will be available by those dates,” Pérez responded to an inquiry raised by the socialist spokesperson Aarón Afonso, who sought information on the actions being undertaken at present.

Afonso highlighted that this Monday marked “eight months since this beach” in Puerto de la Cruz has been closed for swimming, simultaneously criticising the Insular Government Group (CC and PP). He mentioned a meeting with the City Council and the Canary Government where it was asserted to the media that Playa Garden could reopen in the summer or even earlier, a claim that was promptly denied by the insular councillor.

Blanca Pérez elaborated on the measures taken by the Cabildo, through the Insular Water Council, including emergency work to seal the pipeline, which involves the necessary removal of a section that will require a two-week time frame, alongside the urgent drafting of a project to incorporate filtration wells that will assist with the final work on the pipeline, which is currently awaiting authorisation.

Furthermore, the Cabildo de Tenerife has already initiated the process to move forward, “within no more than two weeks”, to tender for the final work on the pipeline and the treatment plant, which is being assessed to see if it can proceed “simultaneously.”

These island measures, she added, are complemented by other initiatives promoted in collaboration with the City Council of the area, such as connecting local residents to the sewage system and repairing Punta Brava, for which the Cabildo has contributed 1 million euros to the municipality.
