Santa Cruz de Tenerife 27 Feb. (Europa Press) –
Officers from the Civil Guard at Playa de las Américas have apprehended five individuals on suspicion of committing a crime against public health relating to drug trafficking, as part of the “Sunset Sport” operation. This initiative is aimed at curbing the use of purported “smokers’ associations” for the illicit sale of marijuana and hashish.
The inquiry commenced last year, 2024, following suspicions raised by the Civil Guard that several establishments, which appeared to be operating legally under the guise of cannabis clubs, were, in fact, being exploited for the illegal distribution of narcotic substances like marijuana and hashish, according to the security agency’s statement.
Consequently, throughout the months of the investigation, sufficient indicators and evidence accumulated, leading to three searches and raids on premises of a comparable nature.
Two of these locations were situated in the town of San Isidro, while the other was found in the nearby area, resulting in the seizure of a total of 6.7 kilograms of marijuana, 3.6 kilograms of hashish, €5,000 in cash, and a vehicle.
The arrested individuals, along with the seized items and narcotics, have been handed over to the Court of Instruction of Granadilla de Abona.
This operation benefitted from the assistance of the local police from Granadilla de Abona and the general body of the Canary Police.
The Civil Guard notes that the individual leading the association had previously been detained for similar offences in 2022 but continued engaging in such illegal activities.
