PSOE Criticizes Rosa Dávila for Lisbon Trip Amid Ongoing Year-Long Tram Strike

On Tuesday, the Socialist Group in the Cabildo de Tenerife addressed the Corporation’s president, Rosa Dávila, who is set to “journey” to the Portuguese city of Porto to examine their railway safety system, whilst the strike by tram workers persists on the island.

The socialist representative in the Cabildo, Aarón Afonso, reminded the president in a statement that the workers’ strike initiated on 9th February 2024, profoundly affecting over 25 million passengers who utilised this transport system last year.

Consequently, the Socialist Party has put forward a motion to be deliberated in this week’s plenary session, urging the island’s president “to take the tram workers and the tens of thousands of daily users seriously, and to do everything within your power to resolve this labour dispute urgently.”

Afonso has stated that since the strike commenced, the town hall of Tenerife “has turned a blind eye to the protests, declining to convene meetings with the Company Committee and to tackle the conflict with resolve. This inaction persists despite incidents similar to those experienced last Christmas, which led to ‘genuine chaos’ in the main shopping districts of the island’s metropolitan area, resulting in delays, congestion and difficulties in accessing and exiting the tram.”

“The inertia of the island president is affecting tram users in Tenerife, and this situation appears to be continuing and worsening during the upcoming Santa Cruz de Tenerife carnivals,” he concluded.
