Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 18 Feb. (Europa Press) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife unveiled on Tuesday the final design of the Sports Centre of Tenerife (CDMAR) that will be constructed in Valseco, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with an investment amounting to €6.3 million.

The event was attended by the Vice President and Tourism Counsellor of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Lope Afonso; the Insular Sports Counsellor, Yolanda Moliné; the President of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Pedro Suárez; the First Deputy Mayor of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, Carlos Tarife; the Sports Councillor for the capital of Tenerife, Alicia Cebrián; the CEO of IDECO, Manuel Gómez; and José Lucas Delgado and Rubén Henríquez from Gestur Canarias, among others.

The construction is expected to take approximately 21 months and will restore a facility that shut down due to structural issues in 2020.

Vice President Lope Afonso remarked that with the final endorsement of the project, the new “CDMAR is edging closer to becoming a reality, and Tenerife is on the path to recovering essential facilities for promoting nautical sports, in addition to training and competition.”

Afonso stated that this represents a “new configuration” of the sports infrastructure that will “enhance the area for sporting equipment, contributing to improved coastal defence while simultaneously fostering friendly integration with the city.”

“We are undoubtedly witnessing the development of yet another key sports facility on the island that is being advanced during this administration. If all goes to plan, we could commence work in the last quarter of the year,” he noted.

Yolanda Moliné indicated that they aim to provide “a refreshing change,” and that the objective set by Deportes de Tenerife, within the strategic framework ‘Tenerife active’, includes renewing various infrastructures that have outdated facilities.

“Tenerife must embrace its coastal location, and this centre will cater to all athletes on the island. From the Cabildo, we continue to champion and promote marine and nautical sports in Tenerife through the new Sports Centre of the Sea of Tenerife,” he clarified.

Alicia Cebrián emphasized that “it is crucial”.

A commitment from the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Pedro Suárez expressed that it is a “celebratory” day for those who appreciate the sea.

“Tenerife will soon possess a facility where many skills can be acquired and learnt. The installations will be outstanding, and I commend the project developers. It is essential for the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife that this area serves the public. It is our pledge to the city and to the island of Tenerife,” he stated.

The centre’s goal is to engage children, young people, and adults from Tenerife through a diverse range of nautical sports activities, fostering healthy lifestyle habits, promoting good community relations, and supporting the development of nautical sports.

Specifically, the complex is designed to be the primary instrument for promoting and facilitating nautical and marine activities on the island, reinforcing the policies that the Cabildo de Tenerife has enacted regarding this sector.

The project includes plans for two buildings, along with extensive open space, functioning as a dry marine and outdoor gathering area, as well as providing sea access from the buildings.

The facility will feature a comprehensive services programme, which will include toilets, changing rooms, storage, and a reception area, in addition to a café on the upper deck.
