Marta Pérez Baute never imagined presenting herself to the Queen of the Carnival, despite immersing herself fully in the festivities, just like the rest of her family. She had never considered it until designer Santi Castro reached out to her, proposed this opportunity, and she seized it without hesitation. From that moment on, she has embraced the experience with immense enthusiasm, particularly since her studies allow her to do so. She is currently in her final year of psychology studies and intends to pursue further education, though she is uncertain about which specialisation to choose, a decision she will make once her practical training concludes. “I am certain I will undertake a master’s degree, and my goal is to work as a psychologist,” confesses the 24-year-old from La Laguna, who represents the Añaza Carrefour shopping centre.

– What would it mean to be chosen as queen?

“I haven’t wanted to overthink it because I am relishing the entire experience, as I had no idea what it was like to be on this side of the carnival. However, I can’t deny that it would fill me with immense joy. That’s why I am going to champion my fantasy, acknowledging the tremendous effort behind it, both from the designer and the entire team, and I will strive to enjoy the moment because they’ve told me that I should feel like I’m soaring.”

– Have you prepared a speech in case your name is announced as the new queen on gala day?

“To be honest, no, I hadn’t even thought about it.”

– How would you characterise your fantasy ‘heaven and you’?

“It is magnificent, although it is not yet finished. It’s thrilling to visit the workshop daily to witness the results and progress. I feel a deep connection to it, even with the name. I knew I wanted to dedicate it to my grandmother, who passed away three years ago, as she was like a second mother to me. And from the moment Santi mentioned the name, I thought it was right for me and said: ‘I wish she could be here to see me’, even though I know she will be observing from wherever she is.”

– Are you preparing in any special way to carry it?

“I go to the gym and perform specific exercises to manage the weight since the fantasy is quite large. In addition to the work I share with the rest of the team in the workshop, which we are gradually advancing.”

– What do you enjoy most about the Carnestolendas?

“Always the murgas, as my uncle is a member of the Bambones, and the street carnival. My aunts and cousins have also participated in comparsas and groups.”

– Do you have a favourite costume?

“It varies based on what we decide as a group of friends. Last year I dressed as a fairy, and I enjoyed the pirate outfit; we usually wear those a lot, but it changes with each year and theme.”

– And this year, if you were to be chosen queen, would you still want to wear a costume and join the parades?

“It would be such a thrill for me.”

– What is your most memorable experience from this celebration?

“I’ve always had a great time every year because you meet people you haven’t seen for ages. One specific memory I cherish is the concert by Juan Luis Guerra in 2019. I attended with my closest friend, and we had an amazing time. We often reminisce about that moment.”

– You can’t envision the carnival without …

“Without competitions and without people.”

– What is essential for the carnival?

“Desire, creativity, and enthusiasm.”
