The Convent of Santa Catalina de Siena de la Laguna welcomed yet another year the presence of hundreds of visitors, eager to pay their respects to ‘Siervita’ on the 294th anniversary of her passing. The city, as is customary every February 15, once again celebrated this emblematic figure, reflecting its rich historical heritage.
The second Lieutenant of Mayor Lagero, Fran Hernández, alongside the mayor of El Sauzal, Mariano Pérez, took part in the traditional offering made to Sister María de Jesús on behalf of both administrations. These two representatives from the institutions joined the multitude of faithful in a Saturday dedicated to the devotion for this religious figure, who passed away on February 15, 1731.
The mayor of La Laguna remarked that “each year, an increasing number of individuals wish to visit our historic centre to engage in this time-honoured act of reverence, which resonates deeply with both locals and visitors.” He continued, “This serves as our unique tribute to a woman who devoted her life to religious service and aiding the Lagunera community in its time of need.”
Sister María de Jesús ‘La Siervita’ was born in Sauzal in 1643 and later relocated to La Laguna following her parents’ demise, where she became a member of the convent of Santa Catalina de Siena, remaining there until the age of 88.
