Santa Cruz de Tenerife 15 Feb. (Europa Press) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife is hosting the second session of Midalab this weekend, the island’s inaugural creative laboratory for design and crafts. This event spans four days, with one day having taken place yesterday, continuing until Monday at the coworking space within the Scientific and Technological Park of Tenerife (PCTT), featuring 30 artisans.

This initiative aims to “revitalise and modernise” both traditional and contemporary crafts on the island, as noted by the Minister of Employment and Education of the Cabildo, Efraín Medina, in a statement emphasising the “transversal” work embodied within this project.

Consequently, Midalab is a “groundbreaking” initiative where interdisciplinary experimentation and collaboration among artisans, designers, and innovation specialists serve as “fundamental pillars” for revitalising and modernising Tenerife’s local crafts, as explained by the Cabildo.

According to the island’s governing body, the aim is to enhance the competitiveness of the island’s crafts within a modern and global market, while simultaneously appreciating their roots and traditions. To achieve this, the laboratory has assembled a “top-tier” roster of tutors.

This team comprises distinguished professionals and experts in design, innovation, and contemporary crafts, who will share their knowledge and experience to enhance the creative dynamics. Among the notable specialists involved in this laboratory are esteemed figures such as Horme Pérez, Pilar González, and Idoia Cuesta, among others.

Production and marketing

The Cabildo emphasises that the laboratory encourages the adoption of creative and productive methodologies, enabling participants to discover new methods of creation, design, and innovation, thus becoming an open and inventive space that merges design, crafts, and innovation.

This project, they add, fosters research and collaborative production among artisans, designers, experts, and technicians to venture into new avenues of artisanal innovation.

Organised by the Cabildo de Tenerife through the Island Company of Crafts (ARTERIFE), it collaborates with the Scientific-Technological Park of Tenerife (PCTT) and several municipalities of Tenerife, with additional municipal corporations expected to join.

The products emerging from the creative process at Midalab may be produced and marketed by ARTERIFE INNOVATION, alongside various sales outlets across the national territory.

Thus, the distribution of these products will occur through physical stores of collaborators, online platforms, and in specialised fairs and events.

According to the local government, this marketing model enables the creations developed at Midalab to reach a wider audience, providing artisans with the chance to expand their businesses and generate increased income.
