The spokesperson for the socialist group in the Arona City Council, José Julián Mena, has expressed his worry today after discovering that the House of the Sea in Los Cristianos has started to be occupied, which could hinder its rehabilitation as a comprehensive centre for the elderly. This project aims not only to serve as a day centre but also to provide extensive services, including support for ailments such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.
This concern was outlined in a motion presented by the socialist group, which was approved by all parties during the last plenary session, with the intention of revitalising the initiative originally set in motion by Mena himself as mayor and by the Socialist Party in the City Council, following the assignment of this neglected building by the State.
In 2018, after negotiations with the central government, the socialist administration successfully secured the property for the City Council. However, today, the municipal government has declined to provide the necessary financial resources to actualise the project.
During the current term, despite the majority that Fatima Lemes’ Government enjoyed just weeks ago, the building has been largely overlooked, particularly by the departments responsible for its management, notably works, urban planning, and the care of the elderly. This neglect has led to the property being occupied by homeless individuals.
The newly formed government coalition of the Popular Party, the Canarian Coalition, and Vox has taken no action to advance the project. However, the Socialist Group has acknowledged the efforts of the Councillor for Social Services in seeking housing alternatives for those in vulnerable situations, including families with children or individuals with disabilities in their care.
The Socialist Group reminded the Government of the chaotic conditions currently prevailing in Arona due to its management thus far. Concerns were raised that the slender minority it possesses, combined with the larger number of political forces it relies upon, could further complicate governance, particularly at a time when several councillors are tasked with security responsibilities in relation to serious incidents, such as vehicle arson in Los Cristianos.
