Realejos Commemorates 70 Years of Unity and Growth

The Realejos celebrated today the Realejo Alto and Realejo Bajo, where the mayor, Adolfo González, unveiled the Original acts of fusion displayed at the Town Hall, alongside its facsimile edition and the exhibition showcasing seven decades of Realejero identity.

This event commemorates the 13th of February, 1955, when the inaugural extraordinary plenary session of the new Realejos Town Council took place, led by Mayor Domingo Luis Estrada, who served until 1966. This plenary was convened following the announcement of the merger in the Official State Gazette on January 6 of that year.

“We have united as one municipality of which we are immensely proud.”

Adolfo González

– Mayor of the Realejos

Among those present were former mayor Oswaldo Amaro Luis, members of the current Municipal Corporation, and representatives from the educational community of IES Mencey Bencom, who have all played a role in shaping the municipality’s unified identity since 1955.

The mayor emphasised that “now is a moment to reflect on our origins, facilitated by this chronological exhibition (organised by Manuel Jesús Hernández, Isidro Felipe Acosta, and José Damián Pérez), adorned with historical references and visual documents that enhance our understanding of the Realejos. Moreover, it is essential for the Realejero Society, as the main actor of our present and future, to consider our aspirations for the next 70 years as we continue to work collaboratively, growing together in our communities and services.”

Increased Engagement

The Los Realejos Town Council, through its protocol department, encourages local institutes and schools to participate in scheduled visits to the Town Hall in the upcoming weeks to explore this exhibition further and delve into the recent history of the municipality.

Simultaneously, coinciding with World Radio Day, Radio Realejos, the public broadcasting station, provided live coverage from the Town Hall yesterday morning. Municipal representatives and key figures in the local history featured on their broadcasts, sharing insights and anecdotes regarding the merger process along with other informative content, thereby honouring both the municipality’s commemorative event and the legacy of broadcasting.
