Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 12 Feb. (Europa Press) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife has given the green light on Wednesday to a budget of 14.6 million euros for the enhancement and modernisation of the socio-health centres overseen by the Institute of Social and Socio-health Care (IASS), alongside ensuring funding for the organisations providing disability services on the island.

During a press briefing concerning government council decisions, Afonso elaborated that 4.7 million euros will be allocated for renovating and equipping centres, adapting infrastructure to comply with new accessibility and energy efficiency regulations, and bolstering equipment and resources to elevate care quality in centres catering to the elderly with disabilities.

Additionally, 9.9 million euros will be directed towards the third sector organisations managing disability centres across Tenerife, along with salary adjustments for the contracted disability services and the ongoing funding until the establishment of the new dependency agreement.

The Governing Council has also approved the Tenerife for Employment 2024/2025 initiative, which aims to enhance training and employment opportunities for over a hundred young individuals registered in the National Youth Guarantee System.

This initiative is supplemented by IASS interventions, with a combined investment of 1.8 million euros. It aims to boost the employability of job seekers lacking basic training or professional qualifications through a programme promoting labour and social inclusion.

Montes restoration following the fire

Within the realm of environmental conservation, sustainability, and emergency response, 5.1 million euros has been sanctioned for the ecological restoration of the Tacoronte mountains, La Victoria, Santa Úrsula, and La Orotava, which were impacted by the fire in 2023.

The project includes treatment of dead fuel (clearing, removal, and processing), alongside the ecological restoration of the areas previously occupied by the affected radiata pine, which will be replanted with native species.

As noted by the second vice president, José Miguel Ruano, the works will take place in regions of challenging access, characterised by “significant verticality.” Furthermore, he specified that the currently approved funding could be supplemented in the months ahead.

In terms of Historical Heritage, the Governing Council has permitted the free transfer of the property known as Casa de los Condes de la Gomera or Casa de Piedra, to the Garachico City Council, designating it for use as an interpretation centre for the eruption of the Arenas Negras volcano.

This property, dating back to the 17th century, holds considerable heritage value and is situated within the historical group of Garachico, which has been acknowledged as of cultural interest, as stated in the official announcement.

Collaboration protocol with Cabildo de La Palma

Moreover, concerning planning, the commission to the public enterprise Grafcan has been ratified to enhance and modernise the corporate geographical information system (corporate SIG), an essential tool for territorial planning, heritage management, urban development, and environmental conservation.

The protocol between the Cabildos of Tenerife and La Palma has also been sanctioned to create a stable framework for sharing experiences, jointly participating in project development, and achieving common objectives relevant to their respective territories.

This protocol is designed to outline the general principles for collaboration between the two councils concerning knowledge transfer, advice, research, training, or any other joint initiative or activity that benefits both islands, thereby improving public services provided to citizens and their overall quality of life.
