The Icod de los Vinos Town Council unveiled yesterday the specifics of the XIV Children of Murgas and the XXXI Murgas contest of the North, which will take place in the city of the Drago starting this Saturday. Furthermore, the authorities showcased the poster and the entire programme for the Icod carnival, which this year takes inspiration from the theme of a secret garden.

According to the mayor of ICOD, Javier Sierra, this is a “fantastic year” for the Carnival “as we commence with the significant event that our region holds with the murgas, the talent pool, and their hobbies. It is an honour to host the Carnival this year.” From this point, and as emphasised by the Councillor for Festivities, Cathaysa Concepción, “we can expect days filled with celebrations, galas and competitions, and of course, the vibrant street festivities.”

The XVI Children of Murgas del Norte is scheduled for this Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Just two days later, the adult rounds of the North contest will occur on Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th at 8:30 p.m. Both the preliminary rounds and the final on Saturday, February 22 will be presented by the carnival hosts Puchi Méndez, Alexis Hernández, and Jacobo González.

ICOD’s Carnival 2025 is themed around a secret garden, with the promotional poster crafted by Tenerife’s Nareme Melián “to immerse us in a realm of magic, colour, and fantasy.” Ahead lies a calendar of events that will enliven Icod with various galas and contests, including the school parade, the grand apotheosis, and the burning of the sardine, as well as lively dance nights featuring orchestras and DJs.

Programme

This Saturday, the Icod carnival kicks off at 6:00 p.m. in the historic Dorta block with the XIV Children’s Murgas contest of the North, featuring performances by Acturán Minivirgues, Ironic Menudos, Tirangüines, Raviscuditos, and ferrusquentitos.

On Monday, the same venue will host the first round of the XXXI Murgas contest of the North, showcasing performances by chaladas, tangled, pizzicates, and ironic. The following day will bring the second round, featuring acts by Parlanchinas, Virgueritos, Trinkosos, and Ferrusco.

This Friday, 21st, in Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres square at 9:00 p.m., the carnival proclamation will be delivered by the renowned Icodense photographer Luis Casas, followed by a performance from Miss Marieme. On Saturday 22nd, in the old Dorta block at 8:30 p.m., the grand finale of the XXXI Northern Murgas contest will occur. The IX edition of the Drag Queen Gala and Icodense Carnival Transformism will also be held on the same stage on Thursday.

On Friday 28th, at 10:00 a.m., a school parade will proceed from the preceptor ravine to the Andrés Lorenzo Cáceres square. On Saturday, March 1st, the Great Carnival of Icod de los Vinos will take place in the old Dorta block at 8:30 p.m., and the next day, the Apotheosis Coso will commence from the sentry point to the Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres square. At the conclusion, attendees can enjoy a grand dance with orchestras Los Volcanicos, Machinery Band, the Dominican Combo, and DJ Josu.

On Friday 7th, the Plaza de Lorenzo Cáceres will host the Icodense contest, featuring performances by tireless, tirangüines, and why not? Neither too much nor too little, tongue-in-cheek acts, glasses, and tiranguas. Saturday 8th will witness the burial of the sardine. Upon arrival at Plaza Lorenzo Cáceres, there will be a dance led by widows and widowers, featuring orchestras Teymar, Sonora Olympia, Malibú Band, and DJ Kike Álvarez.
