On Tuesday, Lope Afonso, the Vice President of the Cabildo de Tenerife, along with the Minister for Housing, Sonia Hernández, declared that the Corporation will partake in the Autonomous State-Community of the Canary Islands to facilitate the construction of 674 homes aimed at affordable, energy-efficient rentals. This initiative is part of the recovery and resilience effort, funded by the European Union-Next Generation.

Out of the total projected homes in the Canary Islands under this agreement, 134 are set to be constructed in Tenerife, specifically within the municipalities of Adeje (51), Guía de Isora (24), and Arona (59).

The Cabildo is set to contribute 4.4 million euros towards the co-financing of these residences, which complements the 20 million euros allocated to active housing schemes, land development, and housing rehabilitation during the previous fiscal year. Additionally, there is a commitment of 15.7 million euros for this year (including the 4.4 million from the latest agreement) and 2.85 million euros earmarked for the 2025 instalment of the accord established between the Cabildo and the Icavi (Government of the Canary Islands).

Lope Afonso expressed that since the commencement of their term, they have aimed to “establish the council as a valuable resource for the people of Tenerife, addressing the challenge of housing accessibility” as it is considered “one of the primary concerns of the public.”

He highlighted that “it is crucial to enhance housing policies to provide effective solutions, demonstrating our dedication to this issue.”

Similarly, Sonia Hernández, the Minister for Housing, asserted that inter-administrative collaboration “is vital for tackling the housing crisis and delivering effective solutions to the societal issue of accessing a home.”

Since the start of their term, the Cabildo’s resources for promoting affordable housing have risen to 38.5 million euros, launching various plans and programmes that, once realised, will result in the construction or authorisation of 1,134 homes for this purpose.
