Stargazing Paradise: Tenerife Unveils New Night Sky Observation Point

The Abona Granadilla Mediaías will feature an Astronomical viewpoint specifically crafted to provide visitors with the opportunity to gaze at the night sky while learning about the local flora and fauna. The Granadilla de Abona City Council, through the Department of Municipal Public Works and Services, is overseeing the execution of this project, which will be situated in the Las Vegas core, allowing for the appreciation of both natural and cultural resources along with safeguarding the heritage richness of this region.

This initiative, entailing an investment exceeding 181,000 euros, is set to commence in the upcoming months and is part of the Tourist Sustainability Plan at the destination (PSTD) for the municipality. The project encompasses an area of 18,205 square metres.

The Mayor, Jennifer Miranda, states that “the aim is to rejuvenate this area with a playful-scientific activity, which has notably increased in recent years, and which will enhance this locality in the upper region of Granadilla de Abona, while also providing quality public spaces for the enjoyment of both residents and visitors alike.” In this context, the councillor highlights that Granadilla de Abona was the first municipality in Spain to be designated a Starlight destination, “a certification obtained by this local government that seeks to celebrate a highly treasured resource we possess: the night sky, which has not been fully utilised up until now.”

Furthermore, the Councillor for Municipal Public Works and Services, Marcos Antonio Rodríguez, mentions that this project will aid in the development and economic revitalisation of this part of the municipality from a responsible standpoint. “This initiative adheres to a sustainable and environmentally considerate vision, placing particular importance on the landscape and natural value of the land, as well as contributing to the preservation of natural heritage and the creation of an area of interest that will connect visitors to the environment and its geological history.”

It will enhance natural and cultural resources and will highlight local fauna and flora

The site selected for this initiative is a crucial location in the area, as it connects to the Path network and is well-suited for enjoying high-quality night skies. This space will be adapted for use as a viewpoint, featuring a facility that will house restrooms and an information point while ensuring minimal disruption to the natural and cultural surroundings.

The primary goal is to integrate and revitalise existing caves through considerate intervention, incorporating necessary amenities into the natural setting while safeguarding the aesthetic and ecological significance of the area. The information point will promote LA GEOLOGICAL HISTORY OF LUGA, establishing an educational and cultural space; areas for community activities and gatherings will also be developed. To maintain the authenticity and character of the location, local materials and construction techniques that respect the environment will be employed. The lighting implemented will be regulated to preserve the essential darkness.

This project is being financed through the recovery, transformation, and resilience plan of the European-Next Generation Union. The Tourist Sustainability Plan at the destination aims to foster sustainable actions across its three dimensions: environmental, socioeconomic, and territorial.
