The Canary Islands yesterday chained five days above the threshold of 1,000 new daily cases of coronavirus after adding 1,235 infections to their statistics. Only in five days the Archipelago has added 7,282 clinical pictures, a computation that breaks all the records recorded by the region in such a short space of time. In fact, the community last Saturday noted a record data when verifying 1,688 detections of the pathogen in 24 hours, according to provisional figures notified by the Regional Government Health Department. In addition, since the last balance, there has been one death in Gran Canaria and another in Fuerteventura, so there are already 1,087 people who have died with Covid in the Islands.
Tenerife added 805 cases this Sunday –358 less than on Saturday–; Gran Canaria 314 –11 less–; Lanzarote 46 –36 less–; Fuerteventura 45 –38 less–; La Palma 15 -half-; La Gomera seven –three more–; and El Hierro three – on Saturday it kept its overall record unchanged.
In the community there are already 13,964 patients suffering from the disease –1,133 more than in the previous 24 hours–. Just in the course of a week, the total number of positives has doubled. And is that Last Sunday, December 12, the data released by the Ministry reflected that in the Canary Islands there were 6,876 active cases, which therefore translates into an increase of 103.1%.
Tenerife continues to be the island most affected by the incidence of the virus and has 7,893 affected. Gran Canaria follows, with 4,238; Fuerteventura, with 1,192; Lanzarote, with 426; La Palma, with 163; La Gomera, with 32; and El Hierro, with 19.
In the last hours, 100 epidemiological discharges were issued, so that the count of recovered already amounts to 101,934. But nevertheless, in the Archipelago hospitals there are 268 patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection admitted to the ward –Two more than the previous day– and 57 in the critical areas – the same number remains.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, health workers have performed 2,560,684 diagnostic tests, of which 10,073 were performed on Saturday – 3,973 less than on Friday.
As regards incidence levels, it must be said that the indicator that marks the accumulated rate in the last seven days stands at 383.23 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while that of the last 14 days reflects 525.75 tables about the same number of people.
Below the national average in tests
The Canary Islands has a rate of diagnostic tests of 2,023.42 per 100,000 inhabitants, which is therefore slightly below the national average, which is estimated at 2,083.65. Specifically, the Community of Madrid is the only one, together with the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, that performs more diagnostic tests of antigen tests than PCR, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, between December 5 and 15 . This is reflected in the study carried out by the European medical diagnostic service provider Synlab. In it, PCR tests and rapid antigen tests have been compared, highlighting the low sensitivity of the latter when they are used to examine asymptomatic people who are carriers of the virus and those who are not infected. The medical study, called Safe at work, was carried out on more than 20,000 people who did not report any symptoms, with the aim of detecting the virus. Segmented results confirmed that nearly 40% of cases that tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 with PCR could have been missed using rapid antigen tests.
