City Council Invests in New Home Development with Building Purchase

With an investment of 890,000 euros, the City of Güímar has acquired, via a bidding process, the property located at Venezuela 178 and 180, on the corner of Mexico Street, to establish 15 social housing units for affordable rental. This building comprises three floors plus a basement, housing 12 units, a commercial space, and 17 parking spaces, with a total constructed area of 2,375 square metres.

The local government is considering the alteration of the commercial space by changing its use to facilitate a minimum of three additional homes, ultimately aiming to achieve the planned total of 15.

The mayor, Gustavo Pérez, states that in the bidding process “the condition of the property has been considered, along with the economic estimate for the investment needed for its completion, and the market value derived using the cost method and the relevant technical criteria.” The councillor announces that a meeting will be called to commence the necessary works to complete the building, enabling it to be catalogued for its intended final use.

This initiative is part of the agreement between the City Council of Güímar and the Cabildo de Tenerife, under the Active Housing 2024 programme, aimed at acquiring housing developments that are either completed or pending completion, owned by real estate developers or financial institutions, to increase the stock of social housing.

“We have collaborated closely between the Cabildo, the Government of the Canary Islands, and the City of Güímar so that the municipality will possess a building that embodies the hopes of 15 families from Güímar,” asserts the mayor. He believes that “Güímar has set an example of effective management by working alongside the housing division of the Cabildo and the Canarian Housing Institute (Icavi) to continue implementing measures that address one of society’s significant issues: the housing shortage,” adds Gustavo Pérez.

The councillor from Güímar emphasises that the municipal housing policy encompasses further initiatives aimed at progressing along this established path: “We remain dedicated to coordinated efforts with other administrations to increase the number of social homes in the municipality.” Consequently, he posits that “in the medium term, we could create over 90 new homes. I sincerely appreciate the commitment of those involved in each of these complex projects.”
