The Town Hall of La Laguna enhances its public areas with the establishment of a new park surrounding the Health Centre of Las Mercedes-El Cristo, adjacent to the Camino de las Peras. Spanning a total area of 2,560 square metres and with a budget exceeding 146,000 euros, this project will provide residents with a venue for recreation and social interaction, featuring a Children’s Play Area, a dog park, and internal pathways.

The Councillor for Municipal Services, Fran Hernández, states that “it will be a space designed for all family members to relish. Furthermore, the park’s layout prioritises safety and accessibility, thus promoting the integration of various community sectors.” The scheme entails enhancing and renovating the site, creating a children’s playground, establishing landscaped flower beds, and installing a dog park.

The children’s section will be situated nearest to the health centre, away from traffic, to ensure the safety of young ones. The planned play structures include two inclusive complexes of towers connected by tubes, interactive panels, climbing nets, and slides, tailored to different age groups. Additionally, a swing set, a trio of interactive play structures, and two balancing games—a dock and a group rocker—will be incorporated.

Hernández emphasises that “currently, 60% of the municipality’s playgrounds feature inclusive play areas, and the aspiration is that by 2026, the parks in Laguna will be accessible without limitations to all children.”

A dog park with designated areas

The dog park will be situated adjacent to the ravine and will be separated into two zones according to the size of the dogs: one for those weighing under 10 kg and another for larger breeds. Access will be centrally located within the site, following the design of other dog parks in the city.

To ensure the safety of the animals, the enclosure will be fitted with a secure fence. Additionally, this project will involve the clearing and maintenance of the nearby slope.

“Pets are an integral part of our families and require recreational spaces designed for them and their owners. It is essential that gradually, all neighbourhoods can provide a dedicated area for dogs,” stresses the municipal services head.

Internal pathways and landscaping

The new park will also include internal walking paths that will link the surrounding streets and provide access to both the children’s and dog areas. These paths will be paved to ensure ease of movement.

In terms of landscaping, the existing flora will be complemented with new trees and palm plants, alongside low-growing flowers to ensure unobstructed visibility throughout the park.

This initiative, which addresses community requests, aims to transform this area into a gathering spot for families and their pets, encouraging togetherness and outdoor enjoyment in a safe and accessible setting.
