The San Miguel de Abona City Council is championing the development of a new large residential facility for the elderly in the yellow golf area. They have already provided a plot spanning 7,151 square metres to the Canary Islands Government and the Cabildo de Tenerife, as reiterated by the town hall of San Miguel yesterday.
The City Council highlighted that this initiative aims to mitigate the challenges in accessing public spaces due to the scarcity of such resources. “The current situation indicates a pressing need to expand the number of residential places to accommodate the demographic that faces familial challenges, experiences loneliness, suffers from isolation, or has dependencies that hinder proper care,” stated the City Council in a press release.
Mayor Arturo González remarked that addressing the needs of the elderly is “a key priority” for the local government. He added that transferring this plot and facilitating the establishment of the centre represents “a response to our commitment to the residents of San Miguel, as well as tackling the social issues that impact them. We are hopeful that our proposal will be seriously considered and that we will receive a swift reply on this matter.”
The Councillor for Social Services, Nuria Marrero, elaborated that the demographic trend in San Miguel de Abona shows an increase in the life expectancy of its elderly population. Thus, the establishment of such centres “is essential to ensure well-being and socio-healthcare, particularly for this age group, which, unlike other demographics, is linked to increasing vulnerability and isolation.”
In the meantime, the Cabildo is working towards the implementation of a residential sector at the existing day centre of Father Damián in Tamaide, which will provide 20 accommodation places and 15 daytime spots.
