The City of Santa Cruz will assign an external firm to manage the new parking scheme that is set to be implemented from 2026. To facilitate this, the mobility department is currently drafting the tax regulations that will underpin the Parking Regulation for streets, which will be divided into blue zones (for non-residents) and green zones (for residents) starting next year, with varying pricing and time restrictions.

The councillor, Evelyn Alonso, stated yesterday that “a company will be the concessionaire responsible for regulating the parking scheme and overseeing the implementation and enforcement measures for the blue and green zones across all districts of the capital.”

Of the total designated parking spots, 70% will be reserved for green zones, where residents will have priority and will pay an annual fee of approximately 60 euros, ensuring that they have guaranteed parking in their locality. In contrast, blue zones will cater to non-residents, with a maximum parking duration set at two hours, requiring motorists to pay a fee of between 1 and 2 euros per hour.

“The fees paid by citizens are not intended to generate profit; instead, that revenue will be reinvested in the construction of new parking facilities, both above and below ground, as well as in the development of spaces for new parking spots,” the mayor explained. The plan aims to create approximately 4,100 parking spaces in the municipality over the coming years, with an initial phase involving 1,800 spots.
