The channeling works of the carnage ravine officially commenced on Wednesday, January 29, at the rear of the Adelantado Square. This initiative, which is projected to take 21 months to complete, is a crucial prerequisite for the construction of the future municipal market, set to return to this historic city after its relocation to Plaza del Cristo in 2007.
The undertaking of these works was overseen by the local mayor, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez; the Councillor for Works and Infrastructure, Ángel Chinea; and Luis Díez, the project head appointed by Asch Infrastructura.
The first statement given by the mayor declared, “after 18 years of anticipation, today we celebrate the advancement of citizenship and the recovery process.”
Luis Yeray Gutiérrez noted that “since 2019, we have prioritised this project within our works agenda, and throughout this journey, we have tackled significant technical challenges, such as the necessity to manage this ravine channeling to meet the requirements passed on to us from the island of Aguas.”
The mayor further emphasised that “this channeling is essential for clearing the area designated for the new market’s construction and to alter the initial design, ensuring it does not impact neighbouring properties. Additionally, we have incorporated a new drainage system to enhance safety and functionality without jeopardising the historical context.”
Luis Díez commenced his remarks by stating, “we will begin with the preparatory work to condition the area, followed by the foundation and soil stabilisation works.” He elaborated, “This phase will require significant excavation, during which we will remove approximately 20,000 m3 of earth to facilitate the installation of a concrete structure measuring around 4000 m3, connecting with the existing infrastructure. In conclusion, we will renovate this parking area, providing even more spaces than before.”
Díez also expressed gratitude for the support and cooperation of the La Laguna City Council in facilitating these tasks and acknowledged the understanding shown by local merchants and residents regarding the inconveniences anticipated in the upcoming months.
Preliminary Steps for Channeling
The Councillor for Works and Infrastructure, Ángel Chinea, provided a historical overview of the project, recalling that as early as 2020, the Council examined the potential for a new configuration of the carnage ravine channel to prevent adverse conditions for other properties and the expropriations mandated by the previous plan.
Consequently, the current administration tasked the preparation of a modified basic project, followed by the drafting of the execution project necessary for implementing the new channeling works.
Through this undertaking, the project’s alignment with the Tenerife Hydrological Plan will be assured, supported by the favourable reports from the Insular Water Council (CIATF), the competent authority in this matter.
