The Popular Party, Canarian Coalition, and Vox have come to a consensus in the City of Arona, whereby Councillors Naim Yánez and Melania Santos will take on governmental roles. This decision follows the mayor’s action in removing several councillors from the governing body of Arona.
The three parties asserted in a joint statement that “the new agreement aligns with the aims and guidelines of the Governance Agreement and strategic plan for Arona up to 2027, focusing on the stability and advancement of the municipality, which was initially signed at the start of this mandate. Consequently, stability within the City Council takes precedence, underpinned by a commitment to transparency in municipal governance.”
Going forward, regarding the management sectors, Naim Yánez will assume the second deputy role in the mayor’s office alongside responsibilities for tourism, culture, and historical heritage. In parallel, Melania Santos will become the Delegate Councillor for Economic Promotion, the Primary Sector, and Employment.
Additionally, Javier Baute will lead the urban planning and territory management sector, while Devi Pereyra will oversee housing, human resources, heritage, and transport. Ruth Guacimara Martín, besides managing Social Services, will take on responsibilities for the Elderly and Adesa.
The restructured organisation chart indicates that Guacimara Tavío will head the councils of Finance and Procurement. Héctor Reyes will take on the role of Councillor for Education, Works and Infrastructure, Local Police, Urban Mobility, Traffic, and Road Safety.
Fernando Clavijo’s party has once again crossed the boundary of refusing to collaborate with the far-right, as demonstrated at the Téguise City Council. This Wednesday, Clavijo emphasised that if the programme and agreements within the Arona government remain unaffected, there would be no justification for withdrawing nationalist support from the municipal administration, since the recent decisions made by the mayor, Fatima Lemes (PP), regarding the restructuring of her municipal government fall well within her authority.
The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila (CC), along with the first vice president, Lope Afonso (PP), also defended the inclusion of Vox in the Government of the City of Arona (in southern Tenerife) by arguing that “the stability of public institutions and services takes precedence over ideological differences.”
Arona is home to 87,000 residents and ranks among the most significant tourist municipalities in the Canary Islands. The ongoing interplay of economic and political interests has significantly influenced the governance of this locality.
