Neighbors near Iders, in Puerto de la Cruz, fear a collapse through the cracks

“We are not technicians or architects but it may be that in some corner there is some detachment and could cause some misfortune both to the neighboring buildings and to passersby,” warn several presidents of communities of buildings near IDERS (Palmeras Playa, Guajara apartments, Bahamas, Avenida, Biscal and Iberia) as well as owners of bars and cafes in the area, who recently met to analyze the situation and the measures to be taken to demand that the authorities take measures once and for all to avoid greater evils.

In this sense, they agreed that they have been fighting for two years for the property, abandoned 30 years ago, to be disinfected and cleaned but now, “they realize that with all the incidents that have occurred of fires and strong winds and rain you can see many cracks and several struts that have come off ”and they fear a collapse.

For this reason, they “desperately” ask the authorities to “act urgently because to all this is added the insecurity caused by the squatters who reside in said building.” Therefore, one of the alternatives they are considering to be heard is to call a peaceful demonstration outside the building.

The last letter they sent to the mayor, Marco González, dates from November 11 of this year and in it they reminded him that they met with him in December 2020 -on request to the Common Deputy to ask him to intercede in this matter- and explained the actions that were being carried out to “begin to see results in March 2021”. A posteriori, specifically in December of that year, a motion was unanimously approved in the municipal plenary session to act in the building and yet nothing has been done. “And the Iders continues to be a lawless area where there are” continuous fights, dangerous dogs on the loose, drug use, and rats roaming freely, “insist the residents of the neighboring buildings, who do not rule out a peaceful protest so that once and for all they are heard.

Last Tuesday there was an outbreak of fire in the Iders patio in which fortunately there were no victims or serious losses to be regretted, but all the alarms were raised again.

Concern

On that occasion, Marco González showed his concern about this matter but at the same time assured that the City Council, as an administration, “is tied hand and foot. If it were a municipal issue, we would even act to resolve objections and other legal-administrative issues ”. However, he promised that steps will continue to be taken to find a solution to the abandonment of the property.

In this sense, he explained that after receiving approval from the health authorities to act, the City Council is preparing a current technical report on the state of the property required by the cleaning companies that were invited to the hiring process to ensure safety of its workers.
