Tenerife Island Government Pushes for Royal Decree on Free Transportation

The island groups of Canarian coalition and Popular Party within the Cabildo de Tenerife are set to present a motion at the upcoming Insular Plenary scheduled for Friday 31. They are demanding that the State approve a Royal Decree Law ensuring free public transport services in the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, as well as measures that have already been established in other parts of Spain.

“Political failure”

In light of the “political failure” faced by Pedro Sánchez’s Government, which was unable to implement the so-called Omnibus decree, both the nationalists and the Popular Party have decided to put forward a motion to the Insular Corporation’s Plenary, calling for approval of various matters such as pension revaluations, and aid for La Palma and Valencia, in separate royal decrees.

Spokesmen

According to the spokesmen for CC and PP, José Miguel Ruano and Lope Afonso, respectively, the document outlines that “the disagreement over differing measures has resulted in the lack of consensus within the Congress of Deputies, specifically evident in the rejection of the decree law during the plenary on January 23.” They further state that this situation demands a prompt and robust regulatory response aligned with state policies.

Royal Decree Law

In their motion for the island’s plenary on Friday, PP and CC are proposing “that Pedro Sánchez’s Government establish a royal decree law for the revaluation of pensions, along with another for support aimed at the economic recovery of La Palma, following the consequences of the Volcanic Eruption of Old Summit; also addressing urgent needs in the Valencian Community stemming from the Autumn Dana of 2024.”

Government weakness

Moreover, considering the fragility of Pedro Sánchez’s Government and the fact that “it does not consistently possess the backing of all the groups that enabled the president’s investiture,” the Popular Party and the nationalists are advocating in their motion for the adoption of a royal decree law for “other social measures that can secure substantial parliamentary support within the Congress of Deputies.” This initiative aims to reinforce the successful implementation of free public transport.
