Santa Cruz is set to unveil the largest Christmas tree in Spain to attract visitors and tourists for the forthcoming festive season. This dazzling installation, standing at 50 metres tall, will be situated in the Plaza de España lake, which will need to be drained to prevent any electrical issues. This announcement was made by the Councillor for Public Services, Carlos Tarife, who proclaimed that “it will be the main highlight of Christmas that will even draw the mayor of Vigo to Santa Cruz to witness the finest illumination in the country.”

During the presentation of the Public Services budget for this year, estimated at 13 million euros, Tarife revealed that 637,250 euros will be earmarked for initiatives aimed at enhancing and maintaining public lighting and fountains. Among these, the Christmas lighting will receive 30,000 euros for the installation of facilities.

Furthermore, he mentioned that “the upgrades to the hydraulic and electrical systems at the Plaza de España lake will proceed, optimising its functionality and modernising its infrastructure with a new LED lighting system, featuring colour changes both internally and externally.”

Additionally, the councillor stated that efforts will be made to enhance lighting at pedestrian crossings on Rambla de Santa Cruz, with approximately 186,000 euros allocated for this project. Similar improvements will also take place on Francisco La Roche avenue, Méndez Núñez at the corner with El Pilar, and Plaza Weyler with Méndez Núñez, with around 29,000 euros invested in these last locations. Moreover, the pedestrian walkway on Constitución Avenue will be upgraded, and electric vehicle charging points will be updated.

Another significant intervention will occur in the La Salud neighbourhood, where the lighting on Adeje Street will be enhanced with a total cost of 133,000 euros, alongside the comprehensive replacement of corroded supports in various blocks, involving an investment of over 217,000 euros.

Tarife elaborated that performances will also be staged at the Valleseco field; along with the transition of projectors from the floor to the roof in the Cobasa blocks, while ensuring proper lighting for the pathway adjacent to the fields near the Galcerán bridge; as well as at the junction of the La Alegría neighbourhood and Álvarez de Lugo Street from the Rambla, alongside the installation of public lighting on San Martín Street upon its rehabilitation.

Renovation and enhancement of lighting in urban fountains

The capital’s Council, via Public Services, will commence this year the refurbishment of fountains situated in the extension of Ramón y Cajal Street and the recently upgraded one in Weyler Square, with plans to improve the lighting. A total of about 25,000 euros will be dedicated to both projects.
