SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE Jan. 25 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The PSOE of the Canary Islands has launched the 15th Regional Congress of the PSOE of the Canary Islands this Saturday, which will reaffirm Ángel Víctor Torres as general secretary, with the aim of “returning to govern” the Canary Islands to establish a clear agenda centred on “progress and prosperity” for the archipelago.

In the moments leading up to the Congress’s commencement, a special tribute was paid to Jerónimo Saavedra and José Miguel Pérez, the late former socialist leaders from the Canaries, with the party expressing gratitude for their roles as “two prominent figures” in Canarian politics, illustrating their commitment to public service and how they shaped the current identity of the party.

The president of the PSOE of the Canary Islands, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, conveyed his “immense satisfaction” in hosting the regional Congress in the municipality he oversees, Adeje, while also showcasing the “socialist vision” that characterises him—one that strives to “create wealth to distribute it” through effective employment strategies, public services, and the enhancement of cultural and sports facilities, among other priorities.

“Ángel, you need to leave here empowered. We socialists have full confidence in your integrity,” remarked Rodríguez Fraga, underscoring the significance of this regional Congress in revitalising the “enthusiasm” and “camaraderie” within the party. He took the opportunity to commend the “dedication and human qualities” of the individual who will again serve as general secretary of the PSOE of the Canary Islands.

Nira Fierro, the Secretary of Organisation for the PSOE of the Canary Islands, was responsible for reading the official founding act of the 15th Regional Congress, emphasising the aspiration for this meeting to be “highly participatory,” featuring “ample” and “robust” debate.

The Congress’s leadership comprises Carolina Darias as president, Juan Antonio Rodríguez Abreu as vice-president, and Marlene Figueroa, Jonay Quintero, and Cristina Duque serving as secretaries of minutes.

Carolina Darias, the socialist mayor of La Palmas de Gran Canaria, eloquently articulated the essence of “socialism,” defining it as “commitment, transformation, advancement, and progress.” She reminded attendees of the mission to continue “the path of progress,” a challenge the PSOE has confronted “with tenacity and resolve,” which will now be directed towards three major objectives: tackling inequality, ensuring sustainability, and enhancing productivity.

“This land requires us, and it requires us to achieve victory again as we did in ’23, to resume governance, and to have a socialist president. Ángel, we are all eagerly anticipating your leadership,” Darias asserted during her address.
