Shurna: “Derbies Ignite an Unmatched Passion”

Neither the recent string of results – four consecutive losses – nor the injuries -without Clean for the remainder of the season and uncertainties surrounding Mike Tobey -, nor the ongoing defeat streak against their longstanding rival – a Claretian win in the last ten official encounters. A Canarian derby is a Canarian derby. In contests like the one tomorrow at the Sand the Dreamland Gran Canaria and the Tenerife lagoon (12.00, Movistar Vamos), past performances do not hold much significance, especially given the emotional weight these matches carry for players, coaches, management, and fans alike. “There is always an additional motivation,” remarked John Shurna, one of the key players for Granca. «Even during Christmas, while we were signing autographs, fans brought up Tenerife, and it’s enjoyable. This is what makes this special occasion unique: the energy from the supporters and its significance. We are eager to confront this challenge,” added the Illinois native.

Regarding the streak of four consecutive losses faced by the yellow team, Shurna is resolute: «There will be ups and downs, but you mustn’t let it drag you down. We need to keep working hard and preparing well. We must stay united to perform effectively. While the defeats have been tough, win or lose, we ought to learn and strive to improve in the next match.»

In stark contrast to Dreamland, the Tenerife Laguna arrives at the Arena with five victories in their last six matches of the Endesa League – having only lost once in Madrid. The American forward of the Grancanario team acknowledges that their opponents “have retained their core group of players for an extended period, and that is commendable.” «They have done extraordinary work. Marcelinho, Shermadini, Fitipaldo, Doornekamp, Apromaitis… They have continually added varied elements to the same core. It is a superb team. We are ready to rise to this challenge,” explains the forward.

He provides insights on how to dampen the aurinegro team’s prowess: «We need to focus on minimising their shot opportunities. They are a formidable team particularly in static play, with highly intelligent players. With Marcelinho, along with Shermadini in the paint, along with exceptional shooters on the perimeter who can effectively move the ball… we must ensure they are uncomfortable since they excel in reading the game. We have to adopt a physical style on the court, infused with intensity. In past encounters, we have experienced difficulties at the start of matches against them and we must be well prepared when stepping on the court. We need to concentrate fully. They are an excellent side, but we have our strengths, and we must leverage these to unsettle them.»
