La Laguna Plans Slope Stabilization Project for Camino del Lobo This Year

The La Laguna City Council intends to commence this year the stabilisation of the slope along the Camino del Lobo, located in Bajamar, specifically from the former Neptuno hotel to the coastal point where a water pumping infrastructure for irrigation exists. To facilitate this, an investment of approximately 500,000 euros has been allocated in this year’s municipal budget, awaiting the finalisation of recent studies to determine the precise amount required for the project, as per information provided by the Works and Infrastructure department.

During the latest municipal plenary session, the councillor responsible for the department, Ángel Chinea, had already indicated, while discussing a motion, that “one of the actions included in the new budget is the stabilisation of the Camino del Lobo.”

According to additional information from the department, the aim is to consolidate this road as it serves as a registered access to the sea, which additionally facilitates the pumping of irrigation water located at that coastal point, where the water from the gallery rises to agricultural areas.

The proposed work will focus on the section specifically from the old Neptuno hotel to the coastal point housing the aforementioned pumping infrastructure; however, no work will occur on the subsequent section leading to Playa del Arenal, thus maintaining the previous restrictions on direct access to the beach.

Officials noted that the La Laguna City Council had previously commissioned a technical report to ensure the stability of the Camino del Lobo slope through visual assessment, alongside an estimated budget for the necessary interventions, which was approximated at around 500,000 euros.

Currently, they pointed out, photometric surveys using drones specialised in slope stability will be commissioned, which will facilitate a thorough examination of the terrain type at altitude, enabling exhaustive calculations regarding the necessary protective measures for each section of the road, ultimately leading to the final execution project for slope stabilisation and the precise cost assessment for the work.

This estimated investment of half a million euros has been included in the 2025 budgets, with the intention of carrying out the work in the current year.

New Beach Access

The city council aims to establish a new access to Arenal beach from the TF-13, specifically from the central part of the section that runs above the beach, which has been selected from the alternatives assessed in a study conducted by municipal and Cabildo technicians.

To provide safer access, three new options were explored from the TF-13, alongside variants through Camino del Lobo and La Hoya. These latter two were dismissed as they exhibit particularly problematic areas regarding landslides and are highly exposed to waves (thus, during rough sea conditions, access might be denied, or users could become stranded). The subsequent step will involve the Cabildo tendering the drafting of the project.
