The LGBTIQA+ associations, Libertrans and Caminar Intersex, have voiced their opposition this Thursday to the potential involvement of the extreme right, in conjunction with the political party Vox, within the municipal government of the City Council of Arona in Tenerife, due to the political instability caused by the dissolution of the alliance that previously existed between the Popular Party, Canarian Coalition and More for Arona.
In a released statement, the organisations, which maintain a “scrupulous respect” for matters relating to the political stability of the council government, have responded to reports indicating the potential inclusion of two Vox councillors in the municipal government or, alternatively, that the majorities in the plenary session might rely, directly or indirectly, on the votes of this political group.
They further articulated that “this scenario would mark an unprecedented chapter in the politics of Tenerife, allowing a political party that is openly extreme-right and actively attacks the rights of women, LGBTIQA+ individuals, and migrants to become crucial in shaping policies in a municipality like Arona, thereby jeopardising the rights of the LGBTIQA+ community.”
RELATIONS WITH THE MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT
LGBTIQA+ activists have urged the Canarian Coalition and the Popular Party, along with other political entities represented in the Arona City Council, “to ensure that, if they wish to uphold the rights of LGBTIQA+ individuals and women,” they must not permit any scenario where the Arona government may rely directly or indirectly on the votes from the extreme right, establishing a protective barrier against everything that VOX signifies in politics across its various territorial levels for the most vulnerable groups.”
The Tenerife associations have cautioned that they will “monitor closely” the forthcoming political decisions made in relation to this matter within the municipality of Arona, and have indicated that, should Vox gain a role in the municipal government or if the plenary majorities hinge on their support, “this will sever any form of relationship with the Arona City Council.”
“The LGBTIQA+ organisations of Tenerife will never tolerate the infiltration of the extreme right into the institutions,” they expressed in the statement.
