Revamping the Leisure Terraces of Anaga Avenue: A Noteworthy Transformation

The leisure and dining terraces situated on Francisco La Roche Avenue, commonly referred to as Anaga Avenue, will be required to close at midnight starting from February. This regulation will impact the over 20 establishments in the area from Monday through Sunday, except on Fridays and Saturdays, when they are permitted to remain open until 02.00 hours.

This announcement was made yesterday by the Councillor for Environmental Sustainability, Carlos Tarife (PP), who clarified that this initiative, to be implemented in collaboration with the Urban Planning department, was decided upon following discussions with local residents, who have lodged numerous complaints regarding the nighttime disturbances originating from the street.

Tarife stated that “it has been confirmed, through sound level monitoring devices placed in the vicinity, that the decibel levels significantly exceed those established by local regulations (30db). Therefore, beginning next month, businesses will be required to begin dismantling their terraces by 11:30 p.m., allowing for a complete closure by 12:00 a.m., even if operations continue indoors.” Noncompliance with this directive will result in penalties of up to 90 euros and the revocation of the relevant license.

At present, the terraces on Anaga Avenue, located in the High Tourist Zone, are allowed to operate daily until 2:00 a.m., with the collection of tables and chairs commencing at 1:30 a.m. This timeframe will now be shortened by two hours to ensure the peace of residents, akin to the arrangements implemented for those situated in Plaza Irineo González.

Additionally, he mentioned that another initiative being considered by the council involves installing soundproof awnings outside the establishments, which would mitigate noise pollution and enable proprietors to extend their closing hours. This initiative against noise will equally apply to the schedules of large concerts and festivals, which will no longer be permitted to extend beyond midnight. “We are engaging with the event promoters to communicate this new rule,” which aims to diminish “the sound disruption caused by” such events.

Elevator to be installed in the Plaza de España car park

The Public Services department of the Capital City Council will be introducing an elevator to the Plaza de España car park, as this service is currently unavailable, negatively impacting accessibility. The councillor for this department, Carlos Tarife, revealed yesterday that “the project will be tendered this year, with the intention that by 2026, when Municipal Housing ultimately takes over the management of this underground car park, which comprises 554 spaces in the city centre, it will be equipped with a much-needed elevator.”
