The leisure and dining terraces situated on Francisco La Roche Avenue, commonly referred to as Anaga Avenue, will be required to close by midnight starting in February. This regulation will impact over 20 establishments in this vicinity from Monday to Sunday, with the exception of Fridays and Saturdays, when they may operate until 2:00 a.m. This was disclosed yesterday by the Councillor for Environmental Sustainability, Carlos Tarife (PP), who explained that this decision, which will be implemented in collaboration with the Urban Planning department, was made following discussions with local residents, who have lodged numerous complaints regarding the nighttime noise generated in the area.
Tarife mentioned that “it has been confirmed, through sound level meters positioned in the vicinity, that the decibel levels significantly exceed the limits established by the municipal ordinance (30dB). Therefore, starting next month, establishments will be required to begin collecting their terraces by 11:30 p.m., ensuring that they are entirely closed by 12:00 a.m., even if the interior activities continue.” Non-compliance with this regulation by businesses will result in penalties of up to 90 euros and the potential revocation of their operating licence.
At present, the terraces on Anaga Avenue, located within the High Tourist Zone, were permitted to remain open every day until 2:00 a.m., with tables and chairs needing to be collected by 1:30 a.m. Now, this closing time will be reduced by two hours to provide relief to local residents, similar to the arrangements made for those in Plaza Irineo González.
Moreover, he announced that another initiative under consideration by the city council involves the installation of soundproof awnings outside the establishments, which would mitigate noise pollution and enable business owners to have extended closing hours. This initiative against noise, as Tarife explained, will also apply to the scheduling of major concerts and festivals, which will no longer be permitted to extend beyond midnight. “We are engaging with the promoters to inform them of this measure,” which aims to curtail “the noise generated by” these events.
The Plaza de España car park will feature an elevator
The Public Services division of the Capital City Council will install an elevator at the Plaza de España car park, as this service is currently unavailable, thereby impeding accessibility. The councillor for the area, Carlos Tarife, stated yesterday that “the project will be tendered this year, with the intention that by 2026, when Municipal Housing finally takes over the management of this underground car park, which comprises 554 spaces in the city centre, it can include a much-needed elevator.”
