The Arona SOS Atlántico Festival closes its most special edition

The Arona SOS Atlántico Festival concludes its eighth edition, the most special in its history, in which, for the first time, it brought its message in favor of the oceans to Madrid, La Gomera and Lanzarote, and registered more than 15 million views of Spanish and foreign citizens in an unprecedented media campaign for a cultural festival in the Canary Islands.

The Festival has brought to an end with the realization of three workshops on Ocean Activism, in which it has reflected on marine biodiversity and the need to protect our seas with users of the Rosas del Guanche Occupational Center, El Valito Day Service and Centro Mayor of Arona. The activities were designed and developed by the collective of cultural mediators SUMMA + Kultura.

The eighth edition of the sustainable, transversal and multicultural Festival Arona SOS Atlántico had the support of the Government of the Canary Islands [ICDC y Promotur Turismo de Canarias], Council of Tenerife [Cultura, Turismo de Tenerife, MUNA y Amigos del Museo de Naturaleza y Arqueología], councils of La Gomera [Medio Ambiente] and Lanzarote, SECAC of Lanzarote, Fundación CajaCanarias, and the municipalities of Arona, Agulo, Alajeró, Hermigua, Vallehermoso and Valle Gran Rey.

Seniors and children

Arona SOS Atlántico developed, at the Arona Senior Center, workshops in which the experience of these people in protecting Nature and optimizing resources was collected. This generation has much to tell us to safeguard the sea and its riches.

Located in El Fraile, the El Valito Day Service attends to minors, from Monday to Friday, outside of school hours, assuring them education, food and due care. Two groups of minors made an ocean mural with Arona SOS Atlántico, in which the following subjects were addressed: marine fauna, generation of garbage by human beings and citizen behavior to protect the environment. The SUMMA + Kultura mediators have ensured that the children were very clear about the actions to be carried out to preserve marine wealth.

The El Valito de Arona Day Service Activities Program received, in 2020, the recognition of the Promotion of Positive Parenting granted by the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030 and the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces.

A mural

On the other hand, the users of the Rosas del Guanche Occupational Center, which offers daytime service and enables the social and labor insertion of people with intellectual disabilities, created a mural in which they showed the marine wealth and the garbage that pollutes the ocean, with special incidence of plastic.

Arona SOS Atlántico thanks the aforementioned centers for their collaboration, to put the final touch on the festival, by hosting these three ocean activism workshops, and for the great work they do with vulnerable groups and at risk of social exclusion.
