Mayor Fátima Lemes Confirms Expulsion of Más por Arona Councilors Over Trust Issues

“The choice comes as I have previously highlighted, a loss of trust and significant discontent “due to the manner in which the duties I assigned to the councillors responsible for these sectors have been executed thus far.” This is the statement made by the mayor of Arona (PP), Fátima Lemes, regarding her resolution to remove four councillors from the local government of Más por Arona, necessitating a reorganisation of her team.

This Wednesday, Lemes released the four councillors of Más por Arona from their responsibilities in the municipal administration. She will reformulate the agreement in one of the most significant municipalities in Tenerife. On Wednesday morning, Lemes endorsed the decrees for the removal of the four councillors from Más por Arona: Dácil León, Luis García, Juan Sebastián Roque, and Pura Martín. The pact between the PP (5) and CC (5) will persist, with the two Vox councillors joining the Arona Government.

The Arona City Council issued a statement on Wednesday, following the signing of the decrees dismissing the four councillors, in which the mayor elucidates the motives behind her decision. Here is the complete statement from Fátima Lemes.

“Politics, as I perceive it, is a vocation dedicated to serving the populace. Consequently, I accepted the responsibility of leading the candidacy for Arona City Council. Our municipality ought to be, by right, the most significant in Tenerife and among the wealthiest. Nevertheless, we continue to endure unacceptable delays, stagnation in our progress, and substantial issues that remain unresolved.

I took on the Mayorship of Arona to guide a complicated team, but one that is committed to advancing Arona to the level of development and prosperity that our residents merit.

At this juncture in the term, these objectives remain unmet. In my view, the operation of any team hinges on mutual trust and efficiency. Unfortunately, such conditions are currently lacking in several of the areas delegated to the City Council I lead.

We are here to strive for the welfare of our community, prioritising the collective interests of the municipality over individual ambitions. From this standpoint, I am unfazed by tactical manoeuvres or political agendas; my singular focus is on what our citizens demand and require: actions, projects, solutions to the challenges Arona faces.

Exercising the authority vested in me and in agreement with the rest of the governing coalition, I have opted to revoke the delegations previously held by the members of the Más por Arona group.

This decision stems from the noted loss of trust and profound dissatisfaction with the execution of responsibilities assigned to the councillors in these areas. Additionally, it addresses the urgent necessity to alter the trajectory of this City Council, underpinned by the belief that we can no longer afford to delay the transformation of Arona into the municipality we rightfully deserve.

This reorganisation of governmental areas will entail the appointment of new leaders, a decision I will announce shortly, along with a programme of initiatives in each domain, aimed at being implemented throughout the remainder of the term.

For this Mayor’s Office of Arona, there has been no other commitment from the outset than hard work, absolute commitment, and the determination to advance and safeguard the solutions needed to tackle the challenges our municipality has faced, long neglected for so many years, similar to the entirety of southern Tenerife.”
