The Taxi Sí Canarias movement, present across the various Islands, has submitted a proposal to the Government of the Canary Islands, local councils, and the Canarian Federation of Municipalities (Fecam) for the establishment of Metropolitan Joint Provision Zones (ZMPC). This initiative aims to allow taxi drivers to pick up passengers beyond their municipal boundaries, particularly in the municipalities of Santa Cruz and La Laguna, where there is a greater demand for services.

Zebenzui Pérez, the representative of this association in Tenerife, explained yesterday that this proposal could be implemented “with applications that enhance and improve mobility and the overall experience of the passenger, as they will be underpinned by clear protocols and regulations for appropriate behaviour among taxi drivers, thereby promoting not just efficiency but also effectiveness and sustainability in the service.”

Pérez noted that “the primary outcome of this initiative, if realised, will be to enhance the accessibility of taxis for users and, consequently, facilitate mobility.” To achieve this, these Metropolitan Joint Provision Zones could be tailored to meet the needs of different groups of municipalities within each area, optimising public resources and alleviating traffic congestion in urban areas, among other benefits.

In this regard, Taxi Sí Canarias calls upon the regional government, as well as the corresponding councils, to “take the lead in establishing these ZMPC for taxis by approving regulations to govern them and allocating financial resources for the development of the technological platform and its promotion.”
