Known as Transforma Santa Cruz, the local council of Chicharrero has allocated part of the 2025 budget to the Works and Infrastructure section, amounting to approximately 18 million euros for this year. As councillor of the area, Javier Rivero (CC) explained yesterday, this investment programme will be “crucial in this term for the revitalisation of the city’s neighbourhoods, as we will be able to tender significant projects we have been developing for the past three years.”

Despite an overall budget reduction of 12 million compared to 2024, Rivero noted that “the process of tendering projects will commence, expected to roll out between February and March, after which these will be awarded, allowing work to begin, benefitting areas such as María Jiménez, La Salud, Juan XXIII (Ofra), Barranco Grande, and La Monja, among others.”

In this regard, the mayor emphasised that one of the upcoming developments is the future leisure and sports complex in María Jiménez, which will take precedence. “This project will be tendered next month. Additionally, since the Municipal Housing sector has awarded the construction of 37 homes for social rental in that area, the new sports facility will be located directly opposite that plot, meaning the two developments will progress simultaneously. It is expected to have a budget of 1.7 million, providing the neighbourhood with a covered court and children’s play areas, which are set to be completed by early 2026,” he affirmed.

Another significant project will be the Juan XXIII sports complex in Ofra, which will receive 2.3 million euros allocated for a project anticipated to commence after the summer, aimed at transforming this area on Príncipes de España Avenue into a more accessible space featuring ramps and shaded areas.

In addition, the Ancla area in the La Salud neighbourhood will undergo a complete renovation to enhance accessibility. Regarding this, Rivero explained that “the project, with a bidding cost of 5.7 million, will be put out to tender in March and is scheduled for a 32-month execution period.” He highlighted that “more than 11,000 square metres will be urbanistically renovated, as the approved project will also involve the refurbishment of the Plaza de las Mil Hogares and the surrounding pedestrian zone, eliminating stairs and establishing a covered children’s area along with a calisthenics space, as well as an open central area for events.”

In La Salud, Rivero also announced that “the demolition of the San Gerardo church is planned, with the project already drafted. A budget of 7,500 euros will be dedicated to this work, allowing for the creation of a surface-level and elevated parking area, both expected to be completed by 2026.”

The Southwest will also see enhancements through various reforms targeting the La Monja urbanisation, with 700,000 euros allocated for the rearrangement of the streets, anticipated to go to tender post-summer. Furthermore, the sustainable urban park project in Barranco Grande, with a total budget of 8 million euros, will transform a 30,000 square metre plot, located between Las Hespérides and IES Las Veredillas, into a recreational space for residents of Tíncer, Las Veredillas, and Barranco Grande.

Moreover, this year will see the advancement of remodelling projects for Los Majuelos Avenue (25,000 euros) and the drafting of the project concerning the Palmetum ring (1.3 million), which will convert this area in Cabo Llanos into a new leisure marine zone.
