The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, through its Public Services division, has strongly expressed its disapproval of the newly announced deadline for the completion of the expansion works at the Buenos Aires Treatment Plant, set for 11 December 2025, as per the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. This new timeline further delays the critical goal of eliminating discharges into the sea, which is a significant environmental concern for the city.
Carlos Tarife, the Councillor for Public Services, describes the current situation as “nonsense and a mockery for the residents of Cabo Llanos,” stating that “this postponement exemplifies the continued failures of Pedro Sánchez’s government regarding Santa Cruz.”
The councillor further emphasises that this project, vital for enhancing wastewater management within the municipality, regaining the blue flag status for the coastline, and terminating sea discharges, was initially meant to be completed in 2022.
“It is unacceptable that Santa Cruz will not reach zero discharge due to the ineptitude of the PSOE, whilst other initiatives we are undertaking to address this environmental issue are planned for completion throughout 2025,” asserts Tarife. He also insists on “an urgent meeting with the new Minister for the Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen, to ensure she provides a clear and firm commitment to expedite the completion of these works promptly.”
The City Council maintains that the expansion of the Buenos Aires Treatment Plant is one of the most crucial projects for the sustainability and progress of Santa Cruz. “We cannot permit the ineffectiveness of the central government to continue to harm our city and coastline. This delay is an insult to the local residents, and we refuse to remain passive,” concludes Carlos Tarife.
The City Council reaffirms its dedication to environmental protection and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens, continuing to urge the central Government to fulfil its obligations and adhere to the deadlines established for this significant project.
