The Cabildo of Tenerife, through the Youth department, has trained over 2,000 young students and unemployed individuals as part of the 2024 edition of the Escuela de Tenerife.
This was announced during a press briefing by the Youth Minister, Serafín Mesa, alongside the department’s technician, Begoña Martínez.
The Tenerife Joven School received applications from more than 7,300 young individuals, with 100 training programmes conducted across 27 municipalities on the island of Tenerife.
In this regard, 72.7% of the total participants were women, whereas 26.5% were men, with 53.7% of the attendees being young individuals who have completed their high school and ESO education.
Concerning the participants’ employment backgrounds, over 47% were students, while 33.04% were unemployed youths.
The Tenerife Joven School is a mobile training initiative aimed at those aged between 16 and 34.
The training is delivered through municipalities, either in-person, hybrid, or online formats, aiming to provide young people the chance to develop specific competencies and vital transversal skills for employment, according to a statement from the Cabildo.
Serafín Mesa expressed his pleasure with the response and noted that, as an innovative feature in the 2024 edition, young participants were consulted on the types of training they desired, which influenced the design of the training offerings.
Consequently, the most sought-after training fields include food safety certification, camp monitoring, and school cafeteria supervision.
Within the programme, training activities termed ‘à la carte’ have been established, lasting 60 hours.
This training enables a deeper exploration of more technical and specialised subjects.
In the 2024 edition, for the first time, two ‘A la carte’ courses have been officially certified by external entities, meaning that young participants will receive an official certificate in addition to a diploma issued by the Cabildo of Tenerife upon successfully completing the training activities.
Regarding the 2025 edition, the Youth Minister emphasised that 26 municipalities have already signed up to participate in this training initiative across the island.
TRAINING AND QUALIFICATION
The Tenerife Joven School project commenced in 2016 and aims to encourage the training and professional accreditation of young individuals, equipping them with the skills and competencies necessary to enhance their employability while allowing them to share their training experiences.
Additionally, it seeks to elevate the significance of the Youth Houses as leading centres for training young people, providing support to professionals to bolster the free training offerings available in the municipalities across the island of Tenerife.
The Tenerife Joven School offers three training formats focusing on face-to-face instruction.
The face-to-face format employs a theoretical-practical methodology and spans five school days, encompassing a total of 20 teaching hours.
Conversely, the blended format features a total duration of 25 hours, where students connect with the teacher via videoconference for two days.
Furthermore, they participate in-person at the Youth House within their respective municipality for two days, with the remaining hours dedicated to independent study.
The online option also lasts 25 teaching hours, where participants connect with the instructor for two days via videoconference, with the rest of the hours allocated for self-study.
Additionally, the Tenerife Joven School offers two types of courses known as ‘municipality courses’ and ‘à la carte courses’.
The à la carte courses are 60 hours in duration, designed for more specialised training that covers technical content on topics previously requested.
