A father saved the life of his newborn daughter in the early hours of last Friday, January 3, thanks to the telecare assistance provided by Betsy Álvarez, the coordinating doctor, and Alexis Hernández, the nurse coordinator of the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), which operates under the public company Management of Services for Health and Safety in the Canary Islands, part of the Ministry of Health of the Canary Islands Government.
The incident, revealed this Monday, took place at 1:50 a.m. when the Emergency and Security Coordinating Centre (CECOES) 112 of the Canary Islands Government received a call seeking help for a woman delivering at home in San Isidro, situated in the Granadilla de Abona municipality of Tenerife.
At the moment the father raised the alarm, the mother of the infant was in the expulsion stage of a breech delivery, nearing the end of her pregnancy.
After gathering the essential information, the medical staff at the Tenerife emergency room provided instructions necessary to facilitate the birth, confirming that the infant was experiencing respiratory arrest.
The father began resuscitation efforts on the newborn and successfully turned the situation around, thanks to the guidance given over the phone by the coordinating nurse, who noted the “calmness and focus” exhibited by the parent throughout the ordeal, as stated by 112 in a release.
Shortly thereafter, the Granadilla de Abona Local Police arrived at the residence, accompanied by two advanced life support ambulances from SUC, one of which was equipped with medical facilities.
The personnel from both advanced units attended to the mother and the newborn, taking the necessary steps to sever the umbilical cord.
Moreover, the health team ensured that both mother and daughter were closely monitored during the ambulance journey to the Pediatrics and Gynecology units of the Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria University Hospital, where they arrived in stable condition.
