PSOE Puerto de la Cruz Clarifies Past Cabildo Investments in the City

The socialist faction within the Puerto de la Cruz City Council has issued a response to the mayor. Discrepant standards concerning the support from the Cabildo de Tenerife for the Tourist City have been highlighted. “It is an affront to the intelligence of the residents of Portuá that this unnatural administration overlooks the over 50 million euros of investment from the Cabildo in the previous five years for significant infrastructure such as the reconstruction of the Gran Hotel Taoro, the Aquatic Sports Centre, and improvements to the regional treatment facility,” emphasised the leader of PSOE Porto, Marco González. The socialists further critiqued the comments made by local councillor Leopoldo Afonso as being “the latest farce of the municipal government and the current mayor.”

It should be recalled that Afonso expressed satisfaction that the Cabildo had “finally” invested in his area. He made this declaration during a visit from the vice president of the Tenerife Cabildo and Minister of Tourism, Lope Afonso. “After several years without Cabildo investment in Puerto de la Cruz, we are now receiving adequate funding through the Department of Tourism to undertake significant works such as the comprehensive refurbishment of Aceviño street,” he remarked.

The PSOE’s counterresponse arrived on Friday. According to Marco González, “any investment from the Cabildo or any other entity is welcomed in the city, but this new mayor and his administration are almost absurd in their attempts to obscure what has been accomplished in the past five years, simply because any resident can observe the nearly completed construction at the Aquatic Sports Centre or the impending works at the Gran Hotel Taoro, which represent a total of 30 million euros invested in the city and its infrastructure. He added: “Concealing the legacy of socialism is the political tactic that will characterise these three years of governance by PP, ACP, and CC, as they regrettably have nothing substantial to offer to the city.”

“This disgraceful and biased conduct using the institutional channels of the City Council stands in stark contrast to the approach taken by Marco González and his administration, which always referred to a relay race in executing projects initiated by prior governments, whether at the City Council or the Cabildo,” states the press release sent out yesterday. “Naturally, I do not regret having maintained continuity, with the cooperation of the Cabildo, for all beneficial projects in the city because politics should serve the citizens and not use them to mislead the portuenses,” stated the socialist leader in response to Afonso’s remarks.
