During the week specified between December 16 and 22, the Local Police of Santa Cruz de Tenerife took part in a campaign initiated by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) focused on monitoring alcohol and drug consumption among motorists traversing the capital of Tenerife.
This preventive initiative resulted in a total of 30 drivers being penalised, with 16 testing positive for blood alcohol levels and 14 found to have narcotic substances present in their system.
Throughout that week, the Local Police Testing Service conducted a total of 1,316 breathalyser tests and 255 examinations to identify drug usage among those travelling on the municipality’s roads.
In percentage terms, this indicates that only 1% of the total drivers subjected to alcohol testing tested positive; while for drug tests, the percentage of those penalised is 5% of the total.
The Councillor for Security and Emergencies of the local council, Gladis de León, emphasises that the recorded data “lie within the normal average, although we view positively that there have been no criminal alcohol tests and that the percentage penalised for this situation does not exceed 1% of the total.”
A more in-depth analysis of the data shows that the day with the highest number of positive results for breathalyser tests, defined as those exceeding a level of 0.25 ml/l in exhaled air, was Tuesday, December 17, with 50% of the total sanctions occurring on that day.
Another notable figure is that, on average, a total of 188 alcohol tests were administered each day during that week.
Concerning the tests conducted for the presence of narcotic substances in the body, out of the total 255 tests, 14 returned positive results. Of these, 66% were attributed to cannabis usage, while the remaining 33% was identified as cocaine.
