The Cabildo of Tenerife announced on Wednesday that it is allocating over 200,000 euros in grants for the restoration of nine movable and immovable assets of cultural significance belonging to the Bishopric. Additionally, 879,019.95 euros have been earmarked for the renovation of the Dolores chapel (Icod de los Vinos) and the Van Damme House (La Laguna).

The insular director of Heritage, Isabel de Esteban, explained in a statement that the funding for immovable properties is part of the Insular Historical Heritage Programme 2023-2027, which “outlines the actions that need to be undertaken annually for the rehabilitation of real estate and personal property of cultural importance.”

This programme, which has been in place since 2023, includes grants aimed at individuals, owner communities, local councils, and the Bishopric, “encouraging the restoration of both rural and urban heritage.”

Moreover, the corporation indicated that it also supports the drafting of municipal catalogues and special plans for the protection of historical sites.

In addition, the island director highlighted the “significant commitment” from the Cabildo to bolster the area, with a budget allocation this year of 15 million euros, which will facilitate the execution of various projects that include “architectural rehabilitation, as well as restoration and intervention in public spaces,” stated Isabel de Esteban.

Among the movable assets to be restored is the 18th-century image of San Lorenzo, located in the parish of San Lorenzo Mártir, in Arona.

An anonymous baroque altarpiece from 1750, crafted from carved, polychrome, and gilded wood, from the chapel of San Pedro y Santos Varones, situated in the parish of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción in the capital of Tenerife, along with the main altarpiece of the Church of Saint Francis, which is also anonymous, made from carved, polychrome, and gilded wood from the 18th century.

Furthermore, an altarpiece of the Señor de la Cañita will be restored; this baroque piece, predating 1737, is anonymous and made from carved, polychrome, and gilded wood, located in the parish of Nuestra Señora de La Concepción (Santa Cruz de Tenerife). Another important altarpiece is the Sacred Heart of Jesus, found in the parish of Nuestra Señora de la Luz (Guía de Isora), which is neo-Gothic, anonymous, and dates from the early 20th century.

Moreover, an altarpiece of the Lord of Tribulations will be preserved, located in the parish of San Francisco de Asís (Santa Cruz de Tenerife). This baroque piece dates from the mid-18th century and is anonymous, along with an altarpiece of the Blessed Sacrament (phase II), positioned in the parish of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves (Taganana, Santa Cruz de Tenerife). This particular piece is a niche altarpiece, fashioned from carved and polychrome wood. It is anonymous and represents Canarian baroque style from the 18th century.
