The La Laguna City Council is set to issue a tender this year for the restoration of Casa Menéndez, situated in the Gracia-Finca España area, aiming to transform it into a substantial cultural venue. This was affirmed by the Councillor for Works and Infrastructure, Ángel Chinea, who, during the last regular municipal plenary session, responded to an inquiry from the PP concerning the status of this initiative, stating, “the execution project has already been drafted and received municipal approval.”
“The budget allocation for this year’s execution of the works has been incorporated into the 2025 budget, totalling 1,514,333 euros for the restoration of the property, with a complete execution timeframe set at 18 months,” the councillor elaborated.
The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, previously announced in December 2022 the Council’s plan to restore Casa Menéndez for cultural purposes, assigning the public company Gesplan to develop the basic project and oversee its execution.
This building, originally a family residence, became the property of the City Council as a free space for an urban action unit. Constructed in 1949, it boasts three floors and an area of nearly 500 square metres. It is situated on a landscaped plot spanning 6,551 square metres, also owned by the municipality.
Additionally, the City Council had declared in April 2023 its intention to erect a new building on a plot next to Casa Menéndez, intended as the new headquarters for the School of Music and Performing Arts.

Concerning this development, Ángel Chinea also indicated during the latest ordinary plenary session that “a preliminary project has already been presented to the teaching staff of the Municipal School of Music, based on collaborative efforts in which the needs programme was created,” and further noted that 200,000 euros has been allocated within the 2025 budget for the tendering of the basic project and execution of the building.
“The expansive garden area surrounding the Casa Menéndez Cultural Space, combined with the gardens and open spaces designed for the Municipal School of Music and Performing Arts, will create a cohesive complex dedicated to culture,” he emphasised.
