The authorities of the southern municipalities of Tenerife have shared with DIARIO DE AVISOS their principal initiatives for the forthcoming year 2025, predominantly centred around the upgrading of vital infrastructures, enhancement of public services, and the launch of programmes that foster accessibility and eco-friendliness in the area.
The projects range from the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias, the modular car parks at El Médano, the Los Gigantes car park, to the refurbishment of the cultural centre in Adeje. These municipalities in the south are embarking on an ambitious slate of initiatives and significant financial investments that they aim to realise throughout the upcoming year, while numerous other projects are set to commence during this time, with plans for completion in subsequent years.
Granadilla de Abona has emerged as one of the leading municipalities in the south, boasting an impressive array of projects related to infrastructure, mobility and tourism advancement. Its comprehensive works programme, which emphasises sustainable transport and accessibility, is particularly noteworthy.
Among the highlighted initiatives, as reported by the council, the bid for the cycle lane at El Médano is particularly significant, scheduled for the 2025-2026 timeframe and with a financial outlay of €1.7 million.
Additionally, the Accessibility Plan linking El Médano to Los Abrigos will be advanced, a project projected for this year with an initial funding of over €500,000. With respect to the upkeep and enhancement of public areas, the restoration of the wooden promenade in El Médano, the completion of the Los Abrigos supply network, and the second phase of lighting along Santa Cruz Avenue in San Isidro are included, key actions aimed at improving residents’ quality of life.
El Médano Modular Car Park
In the realms of culture and tourism, Granadilla is dedicated to “high impact” initiatives. Notably, the development of a prominent viewpoint in Las Vegas is anticipated eagerly by the astronomical community. Moreover, the Magallanes interpretation centre will be established in the Sotavento urban park, involving an estimated investment of 1.2 million euros.
Enhancements to mobility and services along the coast also include plans for a modular car park in El Médano, which is currently in the bidding stage and is expected to come to fruition, with a projected budget of 2.5 million euros—this being the most ambitious project in the region.
Additionally, the Adeje City Council is progressing with the refurbishment of the nursery school, funded by European grants, at a total expense of 2 million euros. The project, which continues without disrupting educational operations, will introduce five new classrooms, a dining area, accessible restrooms, and a multifunctional space.
Furthermore, one of the key projects this year for the council led by Jose Miguel Rodríguez Fraga is the extensive renovation of the cultural centre, currently in execution, with a budget of 4 million euros.
Enhanced Energy Efficiency
This initiative aims to modernise a vital space inaugurated in 1992, and it is currently halfway through its process, featuring significant upgrades in energy efficiency and accessibility services.
This establishment is a key component of the town hall’s resources. It accommodates the press office and local radio station, as well as serving as the home of the municipal library. It includes various exhibition spaces, classrooms, and areas for cultural activities, situated adjacent to the auditorium. The completion of these renovations is expected this year.
In Arico, investments are concentrated on the comprehensive enhancement of Degollada, Molino, and El Cerradero streets, which include upgrades to the asphalt and supply networks. A notable tender approaching is for the resurfacing of El Contador street, with an investment exceeding one million euros.
Regarding public spaces, the Plaza de la Villa project will be reactivated, a priority undertaking for the current government owing to its stagnation since 2019. Additionally, improvements will be carried out at the treatment station of Abades and El Porís, collectively involving more than 1.7 million euros.
On another note, Guía de Isora persists with its Municipal Asphalting Plan for 2023-2027, which is allocated 1.3 million euros, focusing on the reopening of the municipal swimming pool. In addition, the construction of the El Pilón Plaza car park stands out with an investment of 2.8 million euros, crucial for revitalising the historic centre.
The Plaza de la Patrona Project
The municipality of Candelaria is set to initiate large-scale projects, notably the refurbishment of the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias, a high-impact venture with an estimated budget of 16.2 million euros. This project, which will be executed in three phases, includes enhancements to the promenade and modernisation of the hydraulic systems. The timeline for execution is 36 months from its commencement last December.
In the realm of social services, the first phase of the Barranco Hondo senior centre will soon be put out to tender, with a budget nearing 5 million euros, providing around 62 placements for individuals in need of assistance. Additionally, the long-awaited construction of a new municipal auditorium, recently approved in full as part of the feasibility study, has a budget exceeding 9 million euros and a completion timeline of 24 months, along with provisions for two levels of parking accommodating 88 vehicles.
Meanwhile, San Miguel is advancing with the finalisation of the TF-1 connection between Chafiras and Oroteanda, a vital project that is anticipated to conclude in the first half of 2025, following over 40 weeks of delays. Furthermore, enhancements will be made to multiple coastal sections and the adaptation of San Salvador beach.
Additionally, the construction of 17 protected dwellings in Arguayo holds a priority for Santiago del Teide. The Canary Islands executive will allocate over 2.9 million euros for this initiative, part of the Canary Islands Housing Plan aimed at fostering the development of subsidised housing. Moreover, the Los Gigantes car park, known as Barranco de Lermes, is planned, which involves the creation of more than 400 parking spaces, utilising an estimated area of 6,000 square metres significantly alleviating the parking deficit.
An urban park is also in the works, promoting sustainability. Consequently, this initiative will cover a total area of 23,000 square metres.
