This Friday afternoon, Maritime Rescue discovered two additional canoes carrying 149 migrants while they were navigating in the waters near El Hierro.
The state agency reported that it was the Civil Guard which alerted them about an echo detected on the radar of the Integrated External Surveillance System (SIVE) in the southern part of the island.
Consequently, the Tenerife Rescue Centre deployed the Adhara and Acrux rescue teams, who intercepted two irregular boats with 72 and 77 individuals on board, respectively, and guided them to La Restinga Dock.
With the arrival of these two new cayucos, the total number of migrants who have reached the Canary Islands in 20 boats since the early hours of Wednesday, Christmas Day, until 4:00 p.m. this Friday now stands at 1,126.
