The Santa Cruz Development Society is spearheading the Reciclab II initiative aimed at enhancing the requalification and workforce reintegration of individuals who have faced unemployment for more than 12 months. This was revealed by the mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, who elaborated that “this programme is funded by the Canarian Employment Service via the Experimental Programme and will benefit a total of 92 individuals who have been long-term unemployed.”
In this respect, Bermúdez clarified that “the primary goal of this project is to improve the chances of reintegration into the labour market for those who have been unemployed for an extended period,” and he added that “it will unfold over twelve months.”
“The positive employment statistics, demonstrating a steady decline in the municipality’s unemployment figures, which now stand at less than 18,000 individuals without jobs, do not imply that we will overlook those who find it most challenging to secure employment. This is precisely why we are keen to respond to as many initiatives as necessary to assist our neighbours in their quest for jobs,” further stated the municipal councillor.
Moreover, the CEO of the Development Society, Carmen Pérez, announced that “the City Council has delegated the implementation of this project to the Development Society, for which we have approved the largest training tender in the past 15 years, amounting to 150,000 euros.”
In addition, Pérez mentioned that “regarding the specific objectives, the focus is on equipping the participants with the essential tools to boost their employability, enhancing their work, personal, and professional capabilities,” and noted that “additionally, they will have access to training pathways, professional certifications, and participatory training tailored to the needs of companies, thereby increasing the options for job placements.”
“The training programme consists of six areas of work, which include: ‘Auxiliary operations and digitalisation of warehouse management’, ‘Renewable energies: assembly and maintenance of solar photovoltaic installations’, ‘Installation of telephone systems and network infrastructures’, ‘Sustainable garden maintenance personnel’, ‘Requalification of construction professionals: issuing of professional cards, work at height and in confined spaces’, and ‘Specialisation Training: New Sector Technologies and the Health Sector’, which encompass a diverse range of professions,” Pérez articulated.
“Furthermore, throughout the project, the Sociedad de Desarrollo will conduct tutoring duties with both the participants and the companies,” emphasised Pérez, who added that “with Reciclab II, we also strengthen the professional internship programme in companies recognised in the Certificates of Professionalism, thus establishing an indirect pathway to employment and enhancing the involvement of students in businesses, which will be enriched with a comprehensive range of training pathways focusing on pre-employment skills.”
Conversely, Carmen Pérez highlighted that “this new programme was also devised with the intent of mediating between the business sector and the beneficiaries of the project to aid in their placement, both during the internship period and the hiring phase,” further stating that “it will involve supporting these beneficiaries, where we will operate as intermediaries in finding new roles, which will also help us forge enduring connections with the business community both in our municipality and across the island.”
The Reciclab II project, set to continue until October 2025, consists of several stages including participant selection, a pre-employment programme, a dedicated training course, and an active work programme, and is currently in the initial phase of preparing for the selection of participating candidates.
