This Wednesday, the Cabildo of Tenerife reopened the TF-21 (La Orotava-Vilaflor) and the TF-38 (Chío) roads that provide access to the Teide National Park, while the TF-24 (La Esperanza) route remains closed due to the presence of ice on the roadway.
Teams from the island’s Highways department have been diligently working since yesterday to clear snow and ice, as outlined by the Council.
Moreover, they had to remove several rocks from landslides to ensure the safety of the roads.
The President of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, stated that “the decision to close the access to Teide during this period was always made with the safety of the public in mind.”
While the snow-covered Teide offers a picturesque winter scene, the road conditions, marked by snow accumulation and icy patches, “rendered safe transit impossible,” she added.
Workers have faced challenging conditions as the drop in temperatures and precipitation resulted in ice sheets that hindered travel to Teide, the report notes.
Icy patches still persist on the TF-24, prompting it to remain closed until it is deemed safe for travel.
