Teide Access Closed Again: Ice and Snow Threaten Safety

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 24 December (EUROPA PRESS) –

On Tuesday, the Cabildo of Tenerife restricted access to the Teide National Park for traffic via La Esperanza (TF-24), La Orotava (TF-21), and TF-38 (from Chío) due to the presence of ice and hail on the roads.

This closure will be in effect until conditions are deemed safe for vehicles – they had reopened late on Monday after an improvement in road conditions.

The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, stated in a release that “overnight rainfall resulted in ice patches on the roads, prompting the closures to ensure public safety.”

Additionally, the Minister of Highways, Dámaso Arteaga, highlighted that “the teams from the Highways sector are diligently working to clear the roads; they were able to reopen yesterday afternoon due to their efforts and continue to be active in their work.”

The minister noted that “the aim is to remove the ice and have the roads open later today, but for now, they remain closed until safe conditions are restored.”

The Cabildo of Tenerife had previously closed access to Teide last Sunday because of snowfall and rain, leading to ice patches forming once again.

Although the Roads team cleared the areas on Monday and reopened them, further rainfall during the early hours of Monday led to another closure.

The corporation advises against travelling to Teide National Park while the roads remain closed, encouraging individuals to check updates on road conditions and to heed the signs and instructions from safety personnel to avoid incidents.
