Teide Access Restricted: Snowfall and Landslides Create Safety Hazards

The Cabildo of Tenerife has announced this Sunday that the access points to Teide National Park will remain closed due to inclement weather conditions.

The road management team has been diligently working to remove the snow accumulation and clear landslides on the affected routes. The forecast for the upcoming hours, which predicts further precipitation and potential build-up, necessitates the continuation of access restrictions, the island corporation stated in a press release.

The TF-21, which links La Orotava with the National Park, is still shut between kilometre markers 16 (Aguamansa) and 43 (Cable Car Base Station).

Although the route from the south to the Cable Car has been cleared, perilous conditions in other areas hinder its complete reopening.

Additionally, the TF-24, which ascends from Las Lagunetas, is also closed between kilometre points 24 and 43 (intersection with the TF-21 in El Portillo).

This segment has been cleared, yet sheets of ice and the threat of landslides necessitate its closure.

In light of these circumstances, the Cabildo has opted to prolong the closure of access routes to Teide.

On Monday, December 23, a new operation will be scheduled to tidy up the roads and address any issues that may have arisen overnight.

Considering the updated pre-alert status for storms across the archipelago, the president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, emphasises the need for caution and responsible behaviour.

“The anticipated storms, accompanied by thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and potentially very strong gusts of wind, compel us to take serious precautions,” she remarked.

Residents are urged to refrain from unnecessary travel, particularly to mountainous or coastal regions, and to heed the directives from the authorities.
