The Cabildo of Tenerife has announced this Sunday that, due to adverse weather conditions, the access routes to Teide National Park have been closed owing to the accumulation of snow and the formation of icy patches making travel hazardous for motorists.
The roads affected include TF-21 (access from La Orotava), TF-24 (access from La Esperanza) and TF-38 (access from Chío).
The closure will remain in effect until it is safe for vehicles to pass, as per the Cabildo’s statement.
The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, remarked that “this second day of winter presents a snow-covered Teide that can be observed from afar, a genuine Christmas blessing for all residents of Tenerife and the Canary Islands. It is an image that reflects the island’s beauty and uniqueness, as well as the importance of preserving it and acting responsibly.”
Additionally, the Minister of Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, urged citizens to adhere to the regulations and access limitations for the National Park.
“Our aim is to ensure everyone’s safety. Therefore, it is crucial to heed the instructions of the security forces and avoid unnecessary travel to the area until it is safe,” she stated.
The Cabildo advises residents to refrain from travelling to the National Park while the roads remain closed; they should check for updates on the road conditions via the Cabildo’s Highway Information Centre; exercise extreme caution if adverse weather persists in other parts of the island, and comply with the signs and directives from the security forces to prevent incidents.
