Revamping Rural Infrastructure in Tenerife: A Three-Year Vision

A slice of urban life in a rural setting. This encapsulates the primary aim of the extensive urban landscaping project spanning twelve municipalities, initiated by the Cabildo of Tenerife, with plans extending over three years, specifically targeting 2025, 2026, and 2027. The initiative to enhance green infrastructures stands as one of the most significant actions within the insular Corporation’s blueprint. Its president, Rosa Dávila, revealed the endorsement of the project’s design. With an investment exceeding five million euros, the initiative’s core aim is to bolster infrastructure, foster biodiversity, and rehabilitate the landscapes of various urban environments.

Dávila emphasised that these measures mark the initial phases of a program coordinated with the respective municipalities. The objective is to ensure effective execution in line with local requirements. The aims extend beyond mere aesthetics; they encompass environmental and social considerations as well. Among the municipalities set to benefit from the initial works are Guía de Isora, Buenavista del Norte, Fasnia, Los Silos, La Guancha, Los Realejos, and San Miguel de Abona.

The island president stated that the first works are slated to commence in 2025, with plans to persist through 2026 and potentially into 2027, thereby reinforcing “the Cabildo’s dedication to sustainability and inclusivity in the urban landscapes of Tenerife.” Currently, this project is financially supported by a fund of 5,272,500 euros.

Guía de Isora

Revamping of La Entrada Street, turning one of the access routes to the town via Isora Avenue into a precursor area featuring shaded sections and garden spaces. Presently, visibility is inadequate. It lacks a budget due to unresolved personnel concerns but is scheduled for execution next year.

Buenavista del Norte

Establishment of a green zone adjacent to the local hermitage, aimed at enhancing accessibility while surrounding the area with shade and indigenous flora. The drafted project is set for execution in 2026, with an allocated budget of 65,000 euros (for drafting).

Fasnia

Modification of the exercise park next to the town hall, integrating shaded areas and a mural to enhance the environment. This project is also set for next year, with execution proposed for the following year, amounting to 120,000 euros.

Los Silos

Enhancement of the El Chorro alley, providing improved access to the historic centre. The estimated cost of the document required to initiate this process is approximately 110,000 euros.

La Guancha

Revitalisation of the square near the Town Hall, which will modernise its design while increasing accessibility and shade through the incorporation of native species. The anticipated 180,000 euros budget may ultimately be adjusted to fund actions in only a portion of the square.

Los Realejos

Transformation of the Icod el Alto crossing into an urban thoroughfare, creating a safe environment for pedestrians. The financial requirement for this work is around 110,000 euros.

San Miguel de Abona

Modification of parking provisions within the urban area to enhance accessibility and landscaping while reducing visual impact. The projected budget stands at 220,000 euros.

Güímar

This initiative, along with the subsequent four in Arafo, Santa Úrsula, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and San Juan de la Rambla, is unlikely to commence before 2026-2027, with potential extensions to subsequent years based on various preliminary steps that must be fulfilled prior to starting the work. For Güímar, it involves the integration of outdoor open spaces adjoining the facilities on Poeta Arístides Hernández street. A preliminary project is required, thus no contracts are expected before 2026. In Arafo, this relates to the landscape integration of Las Cuevas at Lima Beach with the creation of a green area. In Santa Cruz, a park adjacent to the Tahodio ravine relies on the complete drafting of a broader project by the Tenerife City Council that includes the necessary infrastructure. For Santa Úrsula, comprehensive measures will be implemented around the TF-217 laundries, contingent on the overall restoration efforts to harmonise both projects. Lastly, in San Juan de la Rambla, there will be a remodelling of Liberty Avenue, which hinges on the essential prior construction of a parking facility by the northern city council.
