The City Council of La Laguna has opted to implement a range of preventative security measures in response to the impacts already being felt from the alert regarding winds and coastal phenomena issued by the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo de Tenerife. These warnings will remain in effect from today until the conclusion of the alert, adhering to the guidance of the relevant authorities.

Initially, the Department of Social Welfare and Quality of Life at the La Laguna City Council has announced that this Monday, December 16, classes in Municipal Children’s Schools and senior centres will be halted, along with any outdoor events or activities. Additionally, the decision has been made to close the facilities of the Anchieta Disability Entities Centre, the Municipal Library, and the Music School, resulting in the cancellation of any planned initiatives in these venues.

The Autonomous Sports Organisation of La Laguna has proclaimed the closure of all sports centres in La Laguna for this upcoming Monday, alongside the cancellation of all scheduled activities in this domain, both within indoor and outdoor environments.

In a similar vein, the municipal Corporation has also declared the suspension of all activities set for indoor and outdoor festive occasions, as well as the planned meetings, in addition to closing all citizen centres within the municipality.

The La Laguna City Council clarifies that, until now, there have been no significant incidents nor damage caused to residents. Specific occurrences have been noted in some regions of the Northeast, such as the collapse of a fence in a plot, part of a roof from a house, and a tree on the roadside between Tejina and Valle de Guerra. The strong gusts of wind have also overturned a lifeguard booth in Punta del Hidalgo.

In light of this risk, the City Council has moved to close and cordon off the natural pools along the lagoon coast. Local Police, Civil Protection, and the Parks and Gardens and Urbaser teams have set up checkpoints to promptly respond to any incidents.

This series of measures complements those instituted by other relevant authorities, such as the suspension of school and university classes announced by the Government of the Canary Islands for the coming Monday.

In conclusion, the La Laguna City Council expresses its gratitude for the collaboration of citizens in advance and reiterates the importance of adhering to the guidelines and recommendations put forth by all public institutions and organisations to prevent any serious incidents until the alert is lifted.
